The cheapest protein sources
Protein has a reputation for being expensive, but that is mostly about fresh meat and specialty products. Some of the most economical proteins are pantry staples: dried lentils, beans, and chickpeas deliver substantial protein and fiber for very little per serving, and they store for a long time. Eggs, canned fish such as tuna and sardines, tofu, and plain yogurt are all affordable, versatile, and rich in protein.
Buying in the right form matters, too. Dried legumes are far cheaper than canned and only require a little planning; a whole chicken costs less per pound than pre-cut pieces and yields meat plus bones for stock. Larger, less-processed formats almost always cost less per serving than convenient pre-portioned ones.
Combine and stretch
You do not need a large slab of meat at every meal to eat plenty of protein. Combining plant proteins — beans with rice, lentils with bread, hummus with whole grains — gives you satisfying, complete meals at a fraction of the cost of meat-centered plates. When you do use meat, treat it as one component among several rather than the whole dish: a modest amount of chicken or ground meat stretches across a big pot of chili, stir-fry, or grain bowl.
Building each meal around a base of grains and vegetables with a protein woven through keeps both your budget and your appetite in check. It is also how much of the world has always eaten well.
Easy high-protein meals
A few reliable templates make high-protein eating effortless. A lentil or bean stew simmered with aromatics and tomatoes is cheap, filling, and freezer-friendly. Eggs scrambled or baked with vegetables make a fast, protein-rich meal any time of day. A grain bowl built on rice or quinoa with beans, a spoon of yogurt, and whatever vegetables you have is endlessly adaptable.
Batch-cooking your protein base — a pot of beans, a tray of roasted chicken, a batch of hard-boiled eggs — means the most nourishing part of your meals is ready to grab all week, which makes the affordable choice also the easy one.
